Security-Enhanced IoT Device Provisioning via NFC
The emerging area of IoT and the ongoing deployment of wireless embedded IoT devices entail various new challenges. A major challenge is the tradeoff between security and ease-of-use often also seen as partly contradicting each other.
While designing IoT applications, solution providers need to envision that their products are both easy to use and secure. On the one hand, the embedded nature of IoT devices and the wide-spread applicability of these devices require special attention regarding usability, so that the end user is able to configure the devices easily. On the other hand, particularly the communication of wireless IoT networks must be secured, in order to prevent potential attacks to millions of new "always-on and connected" IoT devices.
Therefore, we present some promising approaches of our research on how to combine IoT, security and usability by using NFC for secured device provisioning. Additionally, we present basic findings of our ongoing feasibility study based on concrete IoT-security demo applications, with a focus on NFC aspects.
